Cafe Menu
Our cafe menu changes all the time – daily, even! Here’s a sample of some of our favourite brekkies and lunches right now!
We entered the ‘Cappuccino’ and ‘Espresso’ classes and were judged by an expert panel on the taste, aftertaste and tactile balance of our coffee. Our espresso got compliments on its “dark choc” flavour and “big body with a pleasant mouth feel”, while a cappuccino made with Union Espresso was described as having ‘Sweet, nutty and almond flavour. Good cut through, with a nice delicate, sweet soft finish.’
We already knew we loved Union Espresso but it’s always nice to hear from the actual experts. The AICA, conducted by The Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria, is Australia’s first and only international coffee awards rewarding and recognising excellence. The awards give producers the opportunity to benchmark their produce against industry standards and seek advice from an independent panel of experts.
Roasting coffee transforms the chemical and physical properties of green coffee beans into roasted coffee products. The roasting process is what produces the characteristic flavour of coffee by causing the green coffee beans to change in taste. Our roast is a specially produced blend of coffees from South America, Central America and Asia. Every country’s coffee differs in strength and flavour so it’s important to get the right balance of notes based on the natural variations in the beans. And since variety is the spice of life, we switch up our roast every few months, check in today to see what we’re serving up.
It’s important that you know what to expect from every single cup of LHM coffee and consistency only comes from practice. That’s why we take so much time in training our superstar baristas. They have a lot to learn about the roast, the equipment, the recipes and customer service before we let them loose on the machines. And because we can always grow and get better we make sure to have regular company cupping nights where we review and refresh our knowledge. Our baristas have a genuine passion for great coffee and customer service and we think that shines through in each cup.
Our beans are always 100% Fair Trade because we value and respect the farmers who produce them.
Coffee is a highly volatile commodity, with wide price fluctuations year to year. This is due to coffee production being highly dependent on weather conditions, susceptible to disease and influenced by a range of other factors. Many farmers lack reliable market information, this coupled with often small yields leads to situations of unequal power relations where farms lack bargaining power when engaging in negotiations. Fairtrade helps bring farmers together to strengthen their position and to learn from one another, Globally Fairtrade works with 445 coffee producer organisations representing 810,000 farmers in 30 countries to make sure they are paid fairly for their produce and work.
Here are some of the ways we are waste and energy conscious in our cafes, catering business and kitchen:
We believe that no one in Sydney should go hungry and that everyone deserves healthy food, no matter their circumstances. For this reason we are proud to support the work of St Vincent de Paul Society, Sydney Night Patrol service. Sydney Night Patrol visits various locations throughout the city where they provide fresh healthy food, a hot drink, warm blankets or referrals to other services and beautiful volunteers willing to have a friendly chat. Our contribution to this great cause is a monthly donation of 250 sandwiches.
We look forward to a long relationship with Vinnies and are proud to be a small part of the amazing work they do ensuring that all our neighbours have access to necessities, support and opportunity.
Local Hand Grown is an LHM Foods sustainability initiative running in Spring. This program encourages people to reduce food waste by giving kitchen scraps a chance to keep producing and growing at home. From our information kit:
“Local Hand Grown is a sustainability initiative unique to LHM Foods. You can pick up LHG Garden Kits designed to help you get a jump on your garden. These kits are all made from what would otherwise be food waste produced by our kitchen.
Australians throw away 4,000,000 tonnes of food every year. That amount of food would fill a line of garbage trucks from here to New Zealand…three times. What’s more, food waste releases methane gas as it decomposes and is a significant contributor to climate change.
So we came up with Local Hand Grown to cut back on our own waste while helping others start vegetable and herb gardens at home. These cuttings are all taken from our kitchen and will regrow in water or soil. Just follow the instructions on the tag, be patient for a couple of weeks, eat and enjoy!
Don’t forget to grab a bucket of coffee grounds too, they’re great for compost piles and for adding nutrients to soil. Both the plants and the grounds are on us. Happy gardening!”
Our vego, vegan, gluten-reduced or dairy-free items are all labelled as such on the shelves in our cafes and many products have the symbols directly on their packaging.
Here are the symbols we use to design Vegetarian (V), Vegan (VG), Gluten-Reduced (GR) and Dairy-Free (DF).
We list common allergens clearly on our packaging. These include gluten, soy, eggs, sulphites, nuts (including sesame and tree nuts), peanuts, milk, fish and shellfish. However, because our food is produced in a kitchen that does handle all these ingredients we can’t guarantee that there will not be trace amounts.
